I've been in Wenzhou for a few months now, and I cannot find a Chinese school. Does anyone know if one exists?

All the Chinese I talk to perk up brightly and say, "Oh, you can go to Wenzhou University!" Yeah, a college course isn't what I'm looking for. I don't want a letter grade and I don't want to go waaay outside the city to school every day. I just want a private school with qualified teachers with times in the evenings and on weekends. I don't want language exchange and I don't want a Skype teacher. Thanks for anyone's help!

I've never been to Wenzhou, but I hope you learn about a great school there from someone who knows the city. Problem solved.

But in case you don't, I will go ahead and tell you what I've done more than once in similar situations. I go to a school that teaches English and hire one of their teachers to help me one to one with my Chinese. I try to find one who teaches adult classes, not very young kids. They usually have a grasp of pedagogy and, via an informal interview over coffee, you can see whether their Putonghua is standard or not.

They generally want to do this kind of Chinese teaching "on the side" and "off the books" without the income funneling through the school. That way they can keep all of what you pay them instead of only a part of it. So I am discrete when making my inquiries.

I've also sometimes found a university professor who has spare time. That can be even better if you are lucky with the arrangements. They often are free at the sames you are, namely evenings and weekends.

These methods don't always work out, but more often than not, they do.
