Kenny同志 Posted April 13, 2012 at 05:01 AM Report Share Posted April 13, 2012 at 05:01 AM How would you distinguish a 武館 from a 武校 in English considering the fact that a 武館 is usually more traditional than a 武校? I know it’s perfectly fine to call a 武校 a martial arts school, but I don’t know how I can get the cultural elements of the name 武館 across to native English speakers. Thanks in advance. Kenny同志 Posted April 13, 2012 at 06:37 AM Author Report Share Posted April 13, 2012 at 06:37 AM Thank you Skylee. @Imron No, I don't unfortunately. They are just isolated words.

imron Posted April 13, 2012 at 07:07 AM Report Share Posted April 13, 2012 at 07:07 AM but I don’t know how I can get the cultural elements of the name 武館 across to native English speakers. What cultural elements/differences are you hoping to get across?
Kenny同志 Posted April 13, 2012 at 08:05 AM Author Report Share Posted April 13, 2012 at 08:05 AM Thank you Realmayo. But as I am not a native speaker, I don’t know whether ‘academy’ can do the job. Imron, to me a 武馆 and a 武校 are very different in certain ways. For example, in a 武馆, the students may call the coach or master 师父 and they may call each other 师兄, 师弟, 师姐, 师妹. This is not the case in a 武校 where students usually call their coach 教练, and the 拜师 ritual is less frequently performed.
imron Posted April 13, 2012 at 09:39 AM Report Share Posted April 13, 2012 at 09:39 AM You can't really get that across in a single word, you really need to explain it with sentences. Martial arts schools in the west don't really have the same concepts and it's very much more a teacher-student sort of relationship than the family-style relationships that exists in traditional Chinese martial arts culture.
