What d'ya think badaname? Where are the not-top-100 surnames?

Hi, i was planning to use huan1 as my name, but the only surname that matches has an interesting meaning: to have sexual intercourse.... Strikethrough. Too bad since huan1 is pronounced like my real name (juan).

On the other hand.... What if there was a not so common surname which I can use with huan1? Oh, it could be.... Those friendly chineseforumers probably know

so you want a surname? do you know there is hundreds of surname in chinese culture, and as you are a foreigner you can choose any character you like to use as your surname.

as for huan1, i think you may mean 欢,that means happy, fun. so what is the only surname matches this? i think you mean焦，and the whole name 焦欢 sounds like交换 which means fun to have sex.

you want a phrase or something else? cuz is random to choose a character as a surname.

give you an advise, you can choose 复姓 （compound surname/two-character surname）, such as 宇文、夏侯、上官、欧阳、令狐 etc. almost everyone knows them as surnames but they are also not popular. honestly the only popular surnames in china are just these three: 王、李、张

黄 is a very normal surname. FYI, the name Don Juan is known as 唐璜 in Chinese, which IMHO, sounds quite nice. Since 璜 is quite unusual as a surname, I'd suppose 黄 would be a more suitable choice. And you may want to avoid using common nouns you've listed in post #3 as your full Chinese name, as it is not a Chinese naming convention to do so.

Up until know i had thought the more traditional names had a meaning in each of their TWO characters (instead of the more common three) and a meaning as a whole. But you pointed this is wrong. No noun for the whole name. Wow.

OKEY, sorry for the commentary on 黄. My concern was mainly finding a name which wouldn't have a funny meaning among five and then asking for a nice ring on my result. and 黄 did have yellow in a dictionary. Now you thaught me there is nothing wrong with it

唐璜 sounds pretty nice for Don Juan. Pronunciation has some similitude, and the words boastful and opulent (jade pendant) fit nicely the concept, too The name is Spanish indeed. Common as it can get

A lot of Chinese -> English dictionaries do list "pornographic" as one of the meanings for 黄, so there's no need to get offended. I guess that's like how the word "blue" in English can also mean "pornographic", but it's quite an uncommon usage (normally you only hear it in the phrase "blue movie").

I can attest to the fact it's a common surname though - 我的老师姓黄
