blaketx Posted April 25, 2012 at 03:08 AM Report Share Posted April 25, 2012 at 03:08 AM I really like the way the Ecocn.org group translates every issue of the Economist into Chinese. I like how they submit translations, and then they let others comment and nitpick word choice. The only problem is that their website gives me a lot of issues. Seemingly at random, when I click on various links on the website, Firefox gives me the error message that "The connection was reset." Does anyone know why this may be? Also, I'd be interested if anyone knows of any other groups similar to Ecocn.org. I know that there are groups that do fansubs of American tv shows, but I'm not sure how to get access to those. Anyone else interested in this?
gato Posted April 25, 2012 at 03:46 AM Report Share Posted April 25, 2012 at 03:46 AM Do you know about 译言, the group translation website? http://www.yeeyan.org/ See this article as an example: http://article.yeeyan.org/bilingual/259335 Escape from Camp 14: One Man's Remarkable Odyssey from North Korea to Freedom in the West
creamyhorror Posted April 25, 2012 at 03:51 AM Report Share Posted April 25, 2012 at 03:51 AM That's a great website, blaketx - thanks for sharing it. As a bonus, it's really neat-looking for a forum too! (though AdBlock might be making me think that). Yeeyan's two-column bilingual translation format is fantastic, gato. I wish I'd come across it earlier. And it's possibly the best-designed Chinese site I've come across, to boot. Exciting developments in the language-learning web-sphere. muirm Posted April 25, 2012 at 04:23 AM Report Share Posted April 25, 2012 at 04:23 AM Firefox gives me the error message that "The connection was reset." Are you accessing the site from China? If so, it might just be the GFW killing your connection. Maybe the links are loading content with "restricted" words. If you aren't in China (or are already have some sort of 翻墙), then it could be one of many things. Does the connection drop right away, or does it time out after a number of seconds? insighter Posted April 25, 2012 at 07:23 AM Report Share Posted April 25, 2012 at 07:23 AM I like the ecocn.org site but I am having some problems with it as well. I can access the articles fine for the most part, but whenever I hit 中英对照 it returns me to the homepage or I get a page error.
blaketx Posted April 25, 2012 at 02:14 PM Author Report Share Posted April 25, 2012 at 02:14 PM Gato - Didn't know about 译言 but it's awesome. Don't know how I missed it. Muchos gracias. Muirm - No GFW issues. I think the server itself might be rejecting me. The connection times out almost immediately after clicking a link. I had a feeling that I didn't have rights to go to some pages, but not quite sure anymore because other pages give me this kind of message: "抱歉,本帖要求阅读权限高于 10 才能浏览" This makes me think that privileges and the timeout are two separate issues. icebear Posted April 25, 2012 at 02:33 PM Report Share Posted April 25, 2012 at 02:33 PM There was a time when http://www.ftchinese.com/ was run in similar way - a sanction, fan-run translation of the FT, however visiting it just now it seems to have modernized quite a bit a may actually be official now. Nonetheless, good reading material if that's what gets you going.
