'staying' in a hotel

If you're talking about where you'll be staying, what are the differences in nuance/meaning/correctness in the following (X being the name of the hotel):

1。 住X旅馆

2。 暂住X旅馆

3。 呆X旅馆

4。 逗留X旅馆

and which ones need 在？

1, 2 and 3 should have a 在. These sentences are OK . I can think of how 2 can go without 在 (for conciseness in writing). 3 has a funny / relaxed tone. For 3, you could also use 歪 as an alternative (implying idleness/sickness).

I think 4 is not OK. You don't use 逗留 for a stay in a hotel.

Also keep in mind that Chinese does not usually differentiate between "stay" (in a hotel") and "live" (in a city). Both are 住. That's why Chinese people often get them mixed up in English ("I'm living at xxx Hotel...").

For these two,在is optional:

住(在)旅馆

暂住(在)旅馆

For the 3^rd one I think you need a ”在”

在旅馆逗留.

It's very common on the mainland to hear this, except it's not just for short periods of time.

Yes, I meant that I wonder if that usually refers to short periods of time. I don't think that is what it means.

呆 can be used more widely.

我在超市呆了一下午。

我在上海已经呆了好几年了。

So I would say 呆=stay

This meaning is also sometimes written as 待.
