New Members Dudegee Posted May 5, 2012 at 07:45 AM New Members Report Share Posted May 5, 2012 at 07:45 AM I searched for a similar topic and couldn't find the answer I was looking for, so if this is too similar to something already posted I apologize. I just finished the Michel Thomas Mandarin course (foundation + advanced), but not the vocabulary builder because it was unavailable at my library. I feel fairly confident with what I have learned so far, and can even communicate (somewhat) with the lady at the Chinese restaurant. I am very exited and anxious to continue but I don't know where to go next. There are, however, a few factors that limit me. The first one being money: I don't have much to spend on anything that isn't bills or family related. Time is another: I work two jobs and study as much as I can in between. It's this reason that the Michel Thomas course was good for me since it was all audio and I could listen at work. Exposure would be the last: I know I should start trying to communicate but there really aren't too many people in my area. I could keep talking to the waitress but I don't have time or money to keep going to the restaurant. Not to mention trying to convince my wife that I was trying to improve my chinese and not flirting. All these things aside, I would like to continue learning but I don't know what to do next. I would greatly appreciate an push in the right direction, or any advice at all.
edelweis Posted May 5, 2012 at 01:43 PM Report Share Posted May 5, 2012 at 01:43 PM One resource that is free, and mainly audio, is the FSI tapes. They also have some PDF files that explain grammar. The tapes teach through repetition with English and Chinese, there are plenty of them (I think it was a 1 year full-time program). You can download the stuff from this page: http://fsi-language-courses.org/Content.php?page=Chinese If you search FSI on this forum, you will find plenty of feedback. Generally people find it somewhat outdated but efficient.
New Members Dudegee Posted May 6, 2012 at 09:11 AM Author New Members Report Share Posted May 6, 2012 at 09:11 AM Thanks for the link. I don't know if it's exactly for me, but I can't turn down a free resource. Also it will keep me going while I save up for some of the other things that I saw while searching the forum for FSI, so your advice was double helpful Thanks again.
