panacea sanans Posted May 6, 2012 at 01:19 PM Report Share Posted May 6, 2012 at 01:19 PM Hi, in a music video ( ) some years ago I saw a flag and always wondered what it meant. I am not all sure if I captured it correctly... Now, some people told me it might be Qin seal script. So I thought you might be able to help me? Help would be very much appreciated. <

Demonic_Duck Posted May 20, 2012 at 06:11 PM Report Share Posted May 20, 2012 at 06:11 PM Wow, that's some pretty high production values for a music video.
panacea sanans Posted May 20, 2012 at 06:23 PM Author Report Share Posted May 20, 2012 at 06:23 PM Well, thank you so much, edelweis! It does indeed look very similar... So, if I understand correctly, the sign/character is used to describe "the feudal state of Chin ( 879-2 21 B.C. ) in the Chou Dynasty, which later unified the whole country under the Chin Dynasty (2 21 -2 06 B.C.)"? Demonic_Duck: Actually, the band's leader / director of the video said it was comparatively cheap for what they got back with.
edelweis Posted May 20, 2012 at 06:39 PM Report Share Posted May 20, 2012 at 06:39 PM yes, you can also check the wikipedia page, the first paragraph "dynasties and states" is relevant (well, except the Roman part perhaps)
medivhsteve Posted May 22, 2012 at 05:56 PM Report Share Posted May 22, 2012 at 05:56 PM Actually at the first glance, I think it's '蘭' ,pinyin 'lan2', simplified form is 兰, a kind of flower. At a second glance, I'm sure it's '蘭', not 秦.
jbradfor Posted May 22, 2012 at 06:23 PM Report Share Posted May 22, 2012 at 06:23 PM Really? It doesn't look a bit like the examples for 蘭 here. But then again I'm no expert. What part looks the same to you?
陳德聰 Posted May 23, 2012 at 05:38 AM Report Share Posted May 23, 2012 at 05:38 AM I am 100% in agreeance with edelweis. It is 秦 without a doubt, but your reproduction is a little bit off (though a VERY good one). It is definitely not 蘭, though there are some coincidental similarities in the form of the character, they are just that. Coincidental.
medivhsteve Posted May 23, 2012 at 06:29 AM Report Share Posted May 23, 2012 at 06:29 AM Sorry. After comparing the character 秦 and 蘭 in the webset you refer, I realize that I've made a mistake. But they are too much alike actually.
panacea sanans Posted May 23, 2012 at 08:02 PM Author Report Share Posted May 23, 2012 at 08:02 PM Well, knowing the context and the singer's interests, the interpretation as "Chin Dynasty" does very much make sense. Thank you all so much again. @陳德聰 Yes, I saw how my reproduction differs from what it should be. Since the flag is moving rapidly and only to be seen for a short time, it wasn't easy to be sure about some parts of it. Further, I have never before read or written chinese or seal, and at the time I re-drew it I had NO idea whatsoever of the origin.
