xiaocai Posted June 3, 2012 at 03:39 AM Report Posted June 3, 2012 at 03:39 AM 扶正贴 As I am not a linguist in either language, so please forgive me if there was any confusion. I just want to say that personally I feel that for many Chinese people, one of the main reasons they chose not to exercise their consumer rights (and many other rights under law) is because the relative cost is high compared to many other countries and also regions like Hong Kong and Macau. Also, the implementation can be poor and extremely inefficient by the regulatory body, not yielding any a satisfactory outcome even if you have gone through all the troubles to complain, which is very frustrating. Many of us hope this situation will be improved, but as what I can see it is not on the priority list of the current government. But this is irrelevant to the actual product quality. "If you buy something cheap the quality will be poor. If you buy something expensive, there's a good chance it's fake and you've been conned." is not a norm in China. Quote
Matty Posted July 2, 2012 at 10:47 PM Report Posted July 2, 2012 at 10:47 PM My current pair of 70元 shoes has held up much better so far than the last 3 sets of shoes I bought in Australia, 1 that fell apart, 1 that injured my feet due to bad design and 1 that well, wasn't that bad really but just didn't last. I bought the pair in some underground area near the Apple store in Beijing. Quote
frankwall Posted July 5, 2012 at 12:04 PM Report Posted July 5, 2012 at 12:04 PM Interesting discussion here. Aside from the costs, perhaps the Chinese do not like the trouble of going through legal channels for faulty products that are not worth too much. More expensive stuff, I can really understand. At least statistics from China show that products are improving in quality. Hopefully the amount of complaints and lack of satisfaction is falling. Quote
Scandinavian Posted July 18, 2012 at 02:17 AM Author Report Posted July 18, 2012 at 02:17 AM An update on this. After my last entry to the thread I have been back to the shop as a velcro strip had started tearing. The shopkeeper offered to bring the sandals to a shoe repair shop and have the velcro strips replaced on both shoes (only failing on one shoe but for symmetry replace on both) As I walked there in the failing shoes and the repair could not be done until the next day, the shopkeeper bought me a pair of flip flops from a nearby supermarket, so I could get home. The following day she brought the sandals tom my home, which is a 30 day bus trip. The replaced velcro was not of very good quality, and as the soles had since started splitting into several pieces and the inside of the sole had holes I yesterday went back to the shop asking if they would refund the shoes. They would not, however they did replace them with a new pair of exactly the same model sandals and equipped me with a reciept saying the new sandals would have 3 months quality warranty in case they suffer from the same problems. So, this means I can get a 3rd pair of sandals for free when then new pair fails, they have spent hours on me. For the shopowner it would have been a better to just have given a refund, of course the value of his employees time is probably not that high. The short story, complaining can works, I can highly recommend it. 1 Quote
skylee Posted July 18, 2012 at 02:33 AM Report Posted July 18, 2012 at 02:33 AM And you have spent a lot of time on the sandals too. Probably the value of your time is not that high either. Quote
Scandinavian Posted July 18, 2012 at 02:39 AM Author Report Posted July 18, 2012 at 02:39 AM The value of my principles is higher than the value of my time (and the shopping mall where the shop is happens to be a place I pass very often no matter what) Quote

Matty Posted July 18, 2012 at 08:55 AM Report Posted July 18, 2012 at 08:55 AM That would be 30 minutes Then... You walk an hours bus distance in 1 minute of walking in failing shoes, thought of the olympics? Or... How bad is the bus service/traffic where you live? I like things that make me smile, your post has today. ^_^ Quote
