艾紫茉 Posted June 3, 2012 at 03:37 AM Report Posted June 3, 2012 at 03:37 AM Hi! I'm self studying mandarin by watching 喜洋洋与灰太狼. I was having some trouble understanding a few sentences (I don't know if it's a grammar structure I'm not familiar with, etc). I'll post the Chinese text with question marks next to the parts I didn't understand (specifically bolding the words/characters that are confusing me), and how I translated it. Title of the episode:古古怪界大作战 (?) 乎太郎夫妇一心要吃带青青草原上肥美的沔阳。 他们用尽千方百计捕羊 可总被聪明的羊群耍弄。 (?) 经过二百八十次的惨痛失败以后 乎太郎决定使出终极武器 对羊村进行最恐怖的攻击。 可爱的小绵羊们 能否抵挡住灰太狼的这次攻击呢 (?) 恐怖攻击 又会带给羊村带来一个怎样的命运呢 Big Battle of Strange Ancient Kingdom? The Hutailang couple wholeheartedly want to eat the plump sheep of the Qing Qing Grassland. They have exhausted every possible means to capture the sheep but they are always played with? by the smart flock of sheep. After going through 820 bitter failures Hutailang decided to use the ultimate weapon to carry out a terrible attack on the sheep village. Will the cute little sheep be able to block Hutailang's attack this time? Will this terrible attack once again bring a new fate? to the sheep village? Thanks in advance for your help! Quote
renzhe Posted June 3, 2012 at 01:30 PM Report Posted June 3, 2012 at 01:30 PM For reference https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7pnxNwJQDA 古古怪界 seems to be a strange place in this particular cartoon: http://www.88173.com...00904/1251.html 结果阴阳离子相撞,喜羊羊与灰太狼们吸进了古古怪界。在这个完全陌生的世界,他们经历了许多事…… 可总被聪明的羊群耍弄 = 可是 总是 被 xxx 耍弄 耍弄 is to trick somebody, get the better of someone, 被 is a passive marker 抵挡 is to withstand/resist. 住 is a complement indicating success, so the question is whether the sheep can fend off this new attack. 呢 is a very common question marker. It is often used to prompt an answer, here it ties the reader/listener into the narrative. 怎样的 = "what sort of" 带来 is to bring. So "what sort of fate will this terrible attack bring to the sheep village? 2 Quote
艾紫茉 Posted June 3, 2012 at 10:02 PM Author Report Posted June 3, 2012 at 10:02 PM This is really helpful! I'm still confused, however, about the last line: 带给 xx 带来。Both these words seem to mean 'to bring', so why are they both used in this sentence? Quote
New Members wood Posted June 4, 2012 at 12:06 AM New Members Report Posted June 4, 2012 at 12:06 AM 古古怪界 is zhe main scenc where wolves and sheep fight http://baike.baidu.com/view/7003667.htm First correct few misspelt chinese characters 乎太郎----->灰太郎(灰 literal means gray,"灰太郎" is the name of a male Wolf) 吃带 ----->吃掉(means to eat) 沔阳 -----> 绵羊(绵羊 means sheep) After the correction: 灰太郎夫妇一心要吃掉青青草原上肥美的绵羊。 他们用尽千方百计捕羊, 可总被聪明的羊群耍弄。① 经过二百八十次的惨痛失败以后, 灰太郎决定使出终极武器, 对羊村进行最恐怖的攻击。 可爱的小绵羊们 能否抵挡住灰太狼的这次攻击呢 ?② 恐怖攻击 又会带给羊村一个怎样的命运呢?③ ① Passive Sentence Translation (被动句翻译) 可总被聪明的羊群耍弄 This sentence means "The Hutailang couple are always teased by the smart flock of sheep" 被=by 聪明的羊群=the smart flock of sheep 耍弄= teased When u want to translate a passive sentence into chinese, like by [ someone ] , put by [someone] in front of the verb (here verb is teased) , The Hutailang couple are always teased by the smart flock of sheep ↑ ↓ │_________________│ So zhe structure of zhe sentence becomes : The Hutailang couple are always by the smart flock of sheep teased Then translate to chinese, here comes the native chinese "可总被聪明的羊群耍弄". Ancestors passed down the habits for many years. When i learn english , we put the chinese by [ someone ] in the back and translate into english ~,~! Examples: History is made by people. ↑ ↓ │_______│ 历史是由人民创造的 similar : I am interested in history. ↑ ↓ │____________│ 我对历史感兴趣 I am stocked by zhe news. ↑ ↓ │____________│ 我被这个消息震惊了 ② 能否抵挡住灰太狼的这次攻击呢? 抵挡 = block 呢 When it's in the end of a sentence ,it is a Modal Particle , having no practical significance , just to express an emphatic tone. ③又会带给羊村带来一个怎样的命运呢 带给/带来 both are to bring so ”带给“and”带来“ are repeated and the chinese sentence would be: 恐怖袭击又会带给羊村一个怎样的命运呢? But to say "恐怖袭击又会带给羊村一个怎样的命运呢?" in English, this is ok: what kind of destiny will be brought to the sheep village by the attack? be brought to = 带给 the sheep village = 羊村 what kind of destiny = 一个怎样的命运 by the attack = 恐怖袭击 the original english translation "Will this terrible attack once again bring a new fate? to the sheep village?" is wrong. 《喜洋洋与灰太狼》 is for children, the dialogues may not be very rigorous. Not recommended~ And passive sentence translation (被动句) is important By the way 艾紫茉 is a nice name. | Quote
jbradfor Posted June 4, 2012 at 02:48 AM Report Posted June 4, 2012 at 02:48 AM BTW, is it 喜洋洋与灰太狼 or 喜羊羊与灰太狼? Searching on google has hits for both. Quote
imron Posted June 4, 2012 at 03:24 AM Report Posted June 4, 2012 at 03:24 AM If you look at the title sequence, it's 喜羊羊, which is then a play on the word 喜洋洋. Quote
艾紫茉 Posted June 4, 2012 at 03:31 AM Author Report Posted June 4, 2012 at 03:31 AM 喜羊羊 is the name of the main character or the show and is a play on words of 喜洋洋 which means radiantly happy. 羊 means sheep and 洋 has a couple of different meanings which I'm not sure how to explain. http://www.nciku.com/search/zh/detail/洋/1317648 Quote
renzhe Posted June 4, 2012 at 01:32 PM Report Posted June 4, 2012 at 01:32 PM This is really helpful! I'm still confused, however, about the last line: 带给 xx 带来。Both these words seem to mean 'to bring', so why are they both used in this sentence? To be honest, I don't really know. 给 can also be used to indicate an indirect object (something like the dative case in Indo-European languages) so 带来 would be "bring", and "给" would be more like "to (the sheep village)". But it's not 给, it's 带给. I have a feeling it plays a similar role here, but I'm not sure. Quote
xiaocai Posted June 4, 2012 at 01:59 PM Report Posted June 4, 2012 at 01:59 PM I think it is a mistake. It should be either 带给 or 给……带来, normally. 带给……带来 sounds redundant and essentially you are using the same verb on the same object in the same sentence twice, which is rather strange. Quote
艾紫茉 Posted June 4, 2012 at 10:25 PM Author Report Posted June 4, 2012 at 10:25 PM I think it's 给...带来 also. Thanks for the help! Quote
艾紫茉 Posted June 5, 2012 at 04:11 PM Author Report Posted June 5, 2012 at 04:11 PM First correct few misspelt chinese characters乎太郎----->灰太郎(灰 literal means gray,"灰太郎" is the name of a male Wolf) 吃带 ----->吃掉(means to eat) 沔阳 -----> 绵羊(绵羊 means sheep) That's so embarrassing, I didn't realize the computer changed those characters when I wrote them. Rookie mistake! Thanks so much for your very detailed answer. I found it incredibly helpful. Quote
renzhe Posted June 5, 2012 at 06:29 PM Report Posted June 5, 2012 at 06:29 PM Keep in mind that it's 喜羊羊, but 灰太狼. Quote
