Exaggerating the price of a gift

It doesn't matter if its good as long as it looks good. See all the 200RMB iPhone look-a-likes and the BYD's with Toyota badges. It matters not what you can make people think you can do.

Gato - close guess. We just unwrapped it to see if there was a price on it. It's Caru and it smeels surprisingly nice. Very easy to find online (http://www.perfume.ie/caru-gift-set.html) with a google search but seeing as Chinese only use the internet for QQ and downloading movies it should be safe. :P

Ok so, seeing as it's so easy to find the price online, what advice should we give. Potential loss of face situation for sister-in-law on the horizon after saying the perfume cost €190. Or would it be seen as more than loss of face?

Can you explain why your sister-in-law needs to give an expensive gift to her boss? The perfume looks nice and the price is not shabby at all. 190 euro is over 1500 rmb which is more than what most people (for one person) give at weddings in China. This price is definitely going to raise some eyebrows. A bottle of Chanel N5 is half that price.

Has your sister-in-law already told her boss she's getting her some perfume that costs €190? If not, problem solved, because she can just tell her a more accurate price. If so, problem also solved, because she can just come up with a story that blames you for getting the cheaper perfume instead of the €190 perfume.

Isn't this the SIL's own problem? She knows the cost, she knows her boss, your wife already advised her to tell the real price. Now it's up to her, and the consequences will also be for her.
