Ian_Lee Posted February 2, 2005 at 12:26 AM Report Posted February 2, 2005 at 12:26 AM Does anybody know that Guangdong has lately become the most populous province in China? Guangdong now has 110 million people -- 79 million registered long term residents and 31 million short term residents. It has overtaken Henan and Sichuan to become the most populous province in China. On the other hand, a lot of people from Henan and Sichuan have moved to Guangdong. Of course, such heavy influx of population has created burden on the infrastructure in Guangdong. Water shortage, sporadic brownout,....etc are getting more fequent even though it is not as bad as the northern provinces. Quote
confucius Posted February 2, 2005 at 09:51 AM Report Posted February 2, 2005 at 09:51 AM I believe there are far more Hunan immigrants in Guangdong than Henan. Guangzhou, Chaozhou, and Shantou are saturated with Hunan restaurants and many Hunan construction workers get cheap jobs in the 3 Guangdong SEZs. The Henan migrants tend to go north to Beijing and Tianjin or east to Shandong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang. I know a Henan friend working in Wenzhou and he told me a lot about Henan people's migration trends. It's funny because I have Wenzhou native friends in Austria who make country bumpkin jokes about Henan immigrants who go to their province. I have met some Sichuan immigrants in Guangzhou but a lot of them went to Chongqing and Hubei for 3 Gorges dam related employment. You can hear Sichuan dialect all over Yichang. Quote
bhchao Posted February 3, 2005 at 08:48 AM Report Posted February 3, 2005 at 08:48 AM Guangdong is probably also the richest province in China, given the SEZs there. Quote
Ian_Lee Posted February 4, 2005 at 08:26 PM Author Report Posted February 4, 2005 at 08:26 PM According to my sauna room statistics in Shenzhen, I agree that there are more people (at least girls) from Hunan (and Sichuan) than from Henan in Guangdong. And probably because both Sichuanese and Hunanese speak Mandarin with heavy accent, they are more eager to learn Baihua than other provincial groups since hardly anybody understands their Mandarin anyway. Even though Hunanese girls are known to be very compassionate, Sichuanese girls are very pretty. Just like Koreans, Sichuanese are also famous for their strong appetite for spicy food. The rule of thumb is that the more spicy food they eat, the more tender their skin is. Quote
bhchao Posted February 4, 2005 at 10:01 PM Report Posted February 4, 2005 at 10:01 PM Sichuanese girls are very pretty I agree. There is this one Sichuanese lady who is a waitress at a restaurant that I frequently visit. Good-looking, confident, and intelligent too. 她的氣色很好. We often discuss Chinese history. But she is just one example out of a million Sichuanese. Quote
confucius Posted February 5, 2005 at 12:50 AM Report Posted February 5, 2005 at 12:50 AM That "rule of thumb" about skin texture works real well at Shenzhen saunas. I can imagine you would have to press a lot of flesh in order to accurately determine that chicks from Changsha are as tender as Hunan beef. Quote
