zhwj Posted April 2, 2013 at 01:31 PM Report Posted April 2, 2013 at 01:31 PM Heh. I was wondering if anyone else remembered. Last I saw, a December 5 report noted that construction on the tower hadn't started. The paper spoke with an expert from the Chinese Academy of Engineering who was invited to the test grounds for a visit to demonstration structures. His reaction (once he got over the feeling that his reputation was being exploited by the company for promotional purposed) was that the buildings were "different". Panels were thin, loads were unbalanced across the joints holding the modules together, and the whole place was a firetrap. He told the company, "I commend you for using machine manufacturing methods to manufacture buildings, and I commend your spirit of innovation, but I'd advise you to adopt a more scientific attitude." The company didn't speak to him about the skyscraper though. 1 Quote
frankwall Posted April 4, 2013 at 12:17 PM Report Posted April 4, 2013 at 12:17 PM I am becoming a bit more sceptical about this building. As I said before, I'll really believe it when I see it! And I hope it has proper safety considerations...one of those new hastily constructed skyscrapers in Grozny went on fire yesterday. It was a miracle nobody was killed. And if it does go ahead successfully, will it be the highest building in the world for long? The Saudis are going to build a tower over a kilometre tall in Jeddah. Quote
roddy Posted April 4, 2013 at 12:32 PM Report Posted April 4, 2013 at 12:32 PM I kind of wish they'd do it. It'd be funny. "Hey, China's got the world's tallest building" "Cool, where? Shanghai, I guess..." "Er, a field in Hunan." "Oh well, we should go and see it anyway." "Yeah, there's this kilometer-wide exclusion zone though, as it might fall down any moment." Also, the Guinness World Record entry would read "The tallest building in the world is a derelict firetrap in China." Quote

I cant imagine the horror from that. I do hope they dont make it a race and show the world that they can do it quick, only to have it collapse and tons of people die. there has to be lots of more "engineering" and safety features in this building, its 220 stories, its not a joke.
