Help with sentence structure - Serve the people

I am translating into my language the well known novel Serve the People by Yan Lianke

Although I can understand the general meaning of the sentence below, I'm having troubles with the precise structure and the literary meaning of the part I've bolded.

This section is a sort of "resume" of the main character.

What kind of "competition" are we talking about?

1. 一次师 means "in war/ in a battle"

2. 后勤战线 - rear service to the (battle) front line

3. 学习与业务大比拼活动中 - in the midst of learning and professional work (business/affair) competition.

No. The 次 is the measure word for the competition. The 师 is the army unit - Division? Batallion? I forget.

My guess is:

师后勤 = troop logistics (literally 'troop-rear labour')

Interesting that (大)比拼 isn't in CC-CEDICT, although the meaning is deducible.

师 is a military unit, which on wikipedia corresponds to division in English. In this case, it means the division he belongs to.
