It literally means to follow them to do something, in this case 过日子. 连理也不理 means they "didn't even acknowledge him". 连 means "even" and 理 means to "acknowledge". 不理 means to "ignore". They didn't even pay attention to him. The grammar structure here is "连。。。也不". For example, "even I don't know" would be 连我也不知道. 两边一比较 means "upon comparing the two sides".
