skylee Posted June 25, 2012 at 03:46 AM Report Share Posted June 25, 2012 at 03:46 AM Consider "can't make the tough decision to" for "狠不下心". The whole sentence means "Mommy really can't (make the tough decision to) abandon you."
creamyhorror Posted June 25, 2012 at 04:39 AM Report Share Posted June 25, 2012 at 04:39 AM I didn't know 狠心 could be used like that, but the intended meaning is guessable anyway. 狠心 is normally an adjective meaning cruel, heartless. 狠 is being used as a verb, similar to 立(志), equivalent to the verb harden (one's heart 心). 不下 is a verb complement meaning to not be able to do something and is probably related to the meaning to (metaphorically) set down (as in 下(定)决心). (edit: this implies 下 is a correct complement for the verb 狠). So 狠不下心[X] would mean unable to harden my heart and do [X].
Tiana Posted June 25, 2012 at 07:28 AM Report Share Posted June 25, 2012 at 07:28 AM Consider "can't make the tough decision to" for "狠不下心". The whole sentence means "Mommy really can't (make the tough decision to) abandon you." This is getting interesting (= confusing ), as I've just picked up something very similar sounding: 我想离开他,但又横不下心。
creamyhorror Posted June 25, 2012 at 08:12 AM Report Share Posted June 25, 2012 at 08:12 AM From looking at a dictionary, I guess both 狠(不)下心 and 横(不)下心 are acceptable, and pretty much equivalent in meaning too.
skylee Posted June 25, 2012 at 08:46 AM Report Share Posted June 25, 2012 at 08:46 AM Personally I won't use 橫不下心. I will even think it is a typo. I will however use 把心一橫.
Tiana Posted June 25, 2012 at 08:46 AM Report Share Posted June 25, 2012 at 08:46 AM Yes they're similar but I don't think they're interchangeable. To put crudely, 横(不)下心 is about determination to do do something (maybe because you're too distracted ) whereas 狠(不)下心 is about whether you can go against your conscience (maybe because you're too kind-hearted ). abcdefg Posted June 25, 2012 at 10:27 AM Report Share Posted June 25, 2012 at 10:27 AM abcdefg: So it was written in the subtitles. There is no mistake. I thought it might have just been something heard, not something read. 很不小心 came to mind instead of 狠不下心.

esoyohoo Posted July 19, 2012 at 08:39 AM Report Share Posted July 19, 2012 at 08:39 AM 唯有万里神州 才能容得下 你这举世无双的霸者 只要你有心为之 别说是天下会 就连天下 亦归你所有 Only whole China is big enough for you , the strongest King in the world, to rule. If you have the strong will to do it, not only the Tianxiahui (an organization) is belonged to you but the whole world also belonged to you. Guest Valenty Posted July 19, 2012 at 10:22 AM Report Share Posted July 19, 2012 at 10:22 AM Thank you very much! But why is "is belonged to you but the whole world also belonged to you". in the past tense? Maybe "If you have the strong will to do it, not only the Tian Xia Hui belongs to you but the whole world will also belong to you" ? 天下会 Tianxiahui (an organization) - Can you this name organization translate somehow into English? I have got something like the "Center of the World"
esoyohoo Posted July 20, 2012 at 01:28 AM Report Share Posted July 20, 2012 at 01:28 AM you are right, it depends on the situation. If the speaker wanna flatter the listener, it's past tense; If the speaker wanna encourage him, it should be as what you say. Because in the first situation, normally the speaker wanna express the listener would be the King or final winner because God has already selected him to be the King (in Chinese history, the King always try to make the others believe he is the son of dragon, he is the only one should be and can be the King. So if the others wanna flatter him, they will express that they fully agree with this fact. ) 天下会 is difficult to translate into English because 会 means an organization, such as 天地会Heaven and Earth Society,红花会Red Flower Society,青龙会Blue Dragon Society. So translating it word by word makes its name sound weird.
