Single Simplified Chinese character to represent colors?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I'm working on converting an American children's toy for the Chinese market.

The toy (Lite Brite) represents colors using a single English letter like 'R' for Red and 'B' for Blue, etc.

Would the following be suitable for simplified Chinese?

Red = 红

Yellow = 黄

Green = 绿

Blue = 蓝

Violet/Purple = 紫

Pink = 粉

Orange = 橙

White = 白

Are there other characters that would be more appropriate?

Thanks,

Mike

I think they are ok. My only doubt is Pink = 粉. That Chinese character does not work for me, though I have heard other people use it to refer to pink.

(I left a pink scarf in a restaurant in Beijing. I described the colour to a waitress using the term 粉紅, while she described the colour as 粉色. So I guess for some people 粉 means pink. The scarf was never found.)

My understanding is 粉色 is light pink, whilst 粉紅色 is pink.
