Cheddar Posted June 29, 2012 at 05:29 PM Report Share Posted June 29, 2012 at 05:29 PM I was hoping someone might be able to give me advice - or point me in the right direction - as to where to buy a Chinese-English tablet dictionary that I can write Chinese characters on (with a pen or something) and then get an English definition/pinyin pronunciation of the character. I'm hoping to head back to China in the fall, and I think this might be very helpful. Outside of getting a tablet phone, anyone got any advice? Sorry if this has been asked before. Looked around for a bit, couldn't find anything. Thanks!
Silent Posted June 29, 2012 at 07:32 PM Report Share Posted June 29, 2012 at 07:32 PM If it's an android tablet you might take a look at pleco. It has handwriting recognition that's very decent and it's free (till the 30th of june, so be quick!). I think it's paid available on other platforms too but I didn't check. I've tried a couple of (free) handwrite systems more but I felt those were less. I'm not sure any more which they were. You also ask for advise outside of getting a tablet. If you want a sensible answer I think you should be a bit more specific. What are your goals? What is you situation?
xuexiansheng Posted June 29, 2012 at 07:53 PM Report Share Posted June 29, 2012 at 07:53 PM I'm using an ipad with pleco's app(also use an ipod touch, when I'm on the go). You can use multiple dictionaries and try it out for free, or buy it and use all the bells and whistles.
jkhsu Posted June 29, 2012 at 07:58 PM Report Share Posted June 29, 2012 at 07:58 PM You mentioned not wanting to get a "tablet phone". Any particular reason why not? Tablets are not really phones (although some can function as phones). They're more like mini-computers and the prices on them have gone down while the features have increased. Consider getting a Google Nexus 7 which was just announced at the developers' conference this week. At $199, it's probably cheaper than many electronic Chinese <-> English dictionary devices. You can then use any apps available on the Android market such as Pleco, etc. If that price is still too high for you, there are probably other cheaper Android tablets on the market but the Nexus 7 is probably the best bang for the buck at this point in time. iPads are also an option but if you're concerned about the price, try looking for an older model.
