nipponman Posted February 3, 2005 at 12:02 PM Report Posted February 3, 2005 at 12:02 PM Hey, I was wondering about these words. 啥 I can't find meanings for this in CQuicktrans. But I think it means the same and can be used in the same way as 什麼. right? 噁 and 唸 seem to be variants of 惡 念. Or maybe a way to show a particular meaning of the latter, like 哪 does for 那,* because I can't find either character in my dictionary. Thanks for you assistance. *I say this because 哪 wasn't used before about 50 years ago. 那 covered its interrogative functions. Quote
skylee Posted February 3, 2005 at 12:20 PM Report Posted February 3, 2005 at 12:20 PM 啥 = 甚麼 噁 (e3) as in 噁心 = sickening / disgusting / feels like throwing up 唸 (nian4) = read (aloud) / pronounce Quote
nipponman Posted February 4, 2005 at 03:18 PM Author Report Posted February 4, 2005 at 03:18 PM 噁 (e3) as in 噁心 = sickening / disgusting / feels like throwing up 唸 (nian4) = read (aloud) / pronounce Exactly, that is what confuses me, my dictionary says that 惡 and 念 have these meanings, not giving a thought to the other two characters. skylee Posted February 4, 2005 at 11:37 PM Report Posted February 4, 2005 at 11:37 PM Maybe if you use an older / outdated dictionary, you would find them. My old dictionary (published in 1990) has all three. It even gives a proverb 喑噁叱吒 (yin4 wu4 chi4 cha4), meaning angry roar (this is how 韓信 describes 項羽 as in 史記). Quote
Claw Posted February 5, 2005 at 12:35 AM Report Posted February 5, 2005 at 12:35 AM In simplified Chinese, I don't think the versions with the 口 radical exist... they're both just simplified to 恶 and 念. Quote
nipponman Posted February 6, 2005 at 12:56 AM Author Report Posted February 6, 2005 at 12:56 AM Ok, so they're actually characters, not just wierd mouth-radical spinoffs. like 哪. Thanks, everybody. Quote
