Popular Post xuexiansheng Posted July 8, 2012 at 06:52 AM Popular Post Report Posted July 8, 2012 at 06:52 AM I use my ipod to listen to podcasts while at the gym, walking to work, etc. I wanted to share a recent discovery of a China related podcast. I listen to the excellent Sinica podcast on Pop-up Chinese (free on iTunes and was recently featured on This American Life). It covers recent china news, as well as (my personal favorites) when they speak with experts on historical subjects. The host Kaiser Kuo recommended the China History Podcast by Laszlo Montgomery. I've just started listening to the backlog of about 80 episodes (also all free on iTunes) and really enjoy the variety and perspective of this old china hand as he shares his enthusiasm for Chinese history. Does anyone else have favorite china related podcasts (in Chinese or English) on iTunes that they would recommend? 7 Quote
abcdefg Posted July 9, 2012 at 01:56 AM Report Posted July 9, 2012 at 01:56 AM Those Laszlo Montgomery lectures are absolutely brilliant. I listened to the eight podcasts about the Cultural Revolution. Will look into some of the others later. Thanks for the tip. Quote
Scandinavian Posted September 18, 2012 at 04:22 AM Report Posted September 18, 2012 at 04:22 AM I second that the podcasts are great. Have started to work my way through them from episode 1 (although like abcdefg I was tempted to skip straight to the Cultural Revolution) Quote
character Posted September 18, 2012 at 09:36 AM Report Posted September 18, 2012 at 09:36 AM I enjoy the China History Podcast and Sinica as well. People should be aware that the hosts (and guests on Sinica) have strong personalities and points of view, so don't expect perfectly unbiased and balanced discussion of events. I'm not in any way saying that's bad. I also like some of the podcasts from RTHK: Podcast Station Particularly, the Newswrap and Hong Kong History with Paul Harrison ones. Quote
New Members slyrabbit Posted December 21, 2012 at 09:18 PM New Members Report Posted December 21, 2012 at 09:18 PM I second the RTHK Podcasts - I also only just discovered Laszlo Montgomery, awesome stuff! Quote

They are all excellent, he's an amazing host. It is frightening how many different subjects he tackles week to week. Some China related ones: History- Warring States Period Confucius Genghis Khan Tea Taiping Rebellion The Silk Road The Opium Wars The Great Wall of China The Boxer Rebellion The An Lushan Rebellion Philosophy- The Han Synthesis Daoism I haven't listened to the entire archive, if I miss any please post them. Well, someone might be interested in this. http://www.thatsmags.com/beijing/blog/view/14284 Thanks for checking out our inaugural That's Beijing Podcast! This month our editor-in-chief, Rob Foyle Hunwick, and our arts editor, James Tiscione, sat down for a chat with guests Brendan O'Kane and Linda Jaivin. As well as light-hearted look at some of the recent stories making the headlines in China, we spoke to these two experienced writers and sinologists about their work translating various forms of media from Chinese into English. 1 Quote
imron Posted April 28, 2013 at 09:31 AM Report Posted April 28, 2013 at 09:31 AM Well, someone might be interested in this. That was an interesting podcast. Edit: And the Joyce vs Chinglish test they mentioned is brilliant. Quote

count_zero Posted April 29, 2013 at 03:53 AM Report Posted April 29, 2013 at 03:53 AM The Joyce vs Chinglish skit was a bit awkward though because Linda Jaivin, despite translating Chinese into English for a living, was completely unable to tell the difference and was laughing nervously about it. There's a definite kind of pathos for when an intelligent person is really bad at something. Quote
imron Posted April 29, 2013 at 06:03 AM Report Posted April 29, 2013 at 06:03 AM The skit was average but the concept and the full test (linked above) is an inspired idea. Quote

xuexiansheng Posted December 12, 2013 at 05:48 PM Author Report Posted December 12, 2013 at 05:48 PM Lazlo Montgomery was recently on Sinica podcast to discuss his History of China podcast. A nice fusion of two of my favorites. Sinica Podcast Quote
