yeut Posted July 9, 2012 at 04:31 PM Report Share Posted July 9, 2012 at 04:31 PM This is part of a joke. There is the entire joke: I understand most of it just did not understand the underlined:
jbradfor Posted July 9, 2012 at 05:07 PM Report Share Posted July 9, 2012 at 05:07 PM I would translate it as something like Why would you ever image two old ladies falling into the water (i.e. drowning)? I can understand if you don't like my mother (lit. if you don't like my mother so be it), but your mother didn't have an easy time raising you (i.e. you should be more grateful than to imagine her drowning)!
yeut Posted July 9, 2012 at 09:08 PM Author Report Share Posted July 9, 2012 at 09:08 PM jbrad: . . .but your mother didn't have an easy time raising you (i.e. you should be more grateful than to imagine her drowning)! You translate the above for 妳媽把你養大容易嗎? However, I don't see "didn't" in the sentence. Doesn't say "your mom had an easy time raising you?" jkhsu Posted July 9, 2012 at 10:17 PM Report Share Posted July 9, 2012 at 10:17 PM "妳媽把你養大容易嗎?" = "Was it easy for your mom to raise you?" = a rhetorical question implying that it was difficult for her mom to raise her.
Glenn Posted July 10, 2012 at 12:54 AM Report Share Posted July 10, 2012 at 12:54 AM On a side note, I enjoyed the joke.
jbradfor Posted July 10, 2012 at 01:39 AM Report Share Posted July 10, 2012 at 01:39 AM On a side note, I IM'ed it to my wife, who (predictably) replied "and who would you save, me, my mother, or your mother?". Thinking I was smart, I immediately answered "you, of course". "WRONG! My mother. The other two of us know how to swim!" Oh well, I can never win....
