New Members Mask Posted July 19, 2012 at 06:23 AM New Members Report Share Posted July 19, 2012 at 06:23 AM Hey! So I just took up teaching myself Chinese a few days ago and am on the search for some resources. To give you an idea, this is the third time I'm embarking on a self study mission. I've already done this with German and Japanese with great success. So pretty much what I'm looking for is a Mandarin Chinese grammar reference. The more no-non-sense the better. Pretty much I just want something that'll give example sentences and explanations on the grammar points. It doesn't matter to me how linguistic (or not) the explanations are, so long as they work. To give you an example of what I want, I used this site for Japanese: http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar Had just about everything (obviously not everything, but rather close). For German I used a book that I honestly can't remember the name of. So I'm just looking for something similar to that site for Chinese. It can be a book or a website, it doesn't matter. All I care about is the quality and quantity of explanations. Money isn't an issue if it's what I'm looking for. Here is what I have so far: http://www.amazon.com/Chinese-Comprehensive-Grammar-Grammars/dp/0415150329/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top, http://www.amazon.com/Modern-Mandarin-Chinese-Grammar-Practical/dp/0415700108/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top, and http://resources.allsetlearning.com/chinese/grammar/ What do you guys think of those resources? The site looks pretty promising, do you think I'd be able to get away with just that? Or should I definitely go with one of those books and just use the site as an extra tool? Also, obviously if you have any extra resource suggestions that would be fantastic! P.S. I searched this forum a bit and didn't find exactly what I'm looking for, so sorry if this is a repeat. Sincerely, Robert
Shelley Posted July 19, 2012 at 11:01 AM Report Share Posted July 19, 2012 at 11:01 AM I have the Modern mandarin Chinese grammer a Practical guide. There is also a workbook to go with it. ISBN 0-415-70011-6. I think they are very good and would fit your needs. I would use all resources that you can. Not any one book/site can cover everything because of the sheer enourmity of the chinese language. Also it can make it more interesting. So use everything and anything of reputable status. Welcome to wonderful world of learning Chinese, enjoy and have fun.

HedgePig Posted July 20, 2012 at 04:57 AM Report Share Posted July 20, 2012 at 04:57 AM I have the Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar mentioned above as well as the accompanying workbook and like them very much. They are by Claudia Ross and Jing-heng Sheng Ma. I also very much like the books by Yip Po-Ching and Don Rimmington (1) Basic Chinese: A Grammar and Workbook (2) Intermediate Chinese: A Grammar and Workbook (3) Chinese Comprehensive Grammar There is also "Chinese - An Essential Grammar" which I think is a condensed version of the "Comprehensive Grammar" I should add that I haven't actually used any of these books very thoroughly but do find them useful references. T-revor Posted July 21, 2012 at 03:14 PM Report Share Posted July 21, 2012 at 03:14 PM I like the integrated Chinese series. It's not exclusively grammar but it has grammar lessons at the end of every chapter.
