What would you do if you saw someone beating their wife?

the news said a chinese young man was arrested and charged with "sexual harassment" because he pushed a western man in a swimming pool when the latter was annoying another two chinese girls.

it is a shock to me.

had the same problem in the US with my ex-wife, my neighbors called the police on us for arguing and I called the police on them for loud music.

In China, a lot of basic things like starting a church, protesting, striking, organizing a political party, or criticizing the government are illegal, but it oddly seems like domestic violence is pretty much tolerated. The Chinese value system tends to sound backwards to Western foreigners.

It's police. I often call police for help if anything goes wrong--- It's easy, and the best is that i don't have to manage these disputes myself. I just never do it in china because Gong-An is what you should always keep them away.

I guess there's some universal value, it's not someone here imposing their values to Chinese, it's just something universal. 行俠仗義 ah! Haven't you read Jinyong? :P

Anyway, once I was in a train and a couple argued over something, the wife threw a bottle of beer on the floor, the husband hit her (almost), everyone in the train tried to stop this by saying, "Nanren ma!" (Hey, come on, you're a man!), and the guy stopped immediately. The poor train operator came with a mop to wipe the floor, this time he didn't complain. (No operator in China would wipe the floor with a mop without complaining something first! :P )

But I also wondered what I could do as a foreigner if the locals seemed to be unmoved. When I was in Qui Nhon of Vietnam, my friend saw a guy was killed by 3 other guys (not kidding, they killed him!!!!), while the victim was lying on the street, full of blood, nobody moved to call the police or ambulance. My friend kept shouting to other guys to call (she couldn't speak Vietnamese), and others were finally reluctant to make a call...
