swell Posted August 7, 2012 at 03:43 AM Report Posted August 7, 2012 at 03:43 AM Hi, I am currently living in China with my Chinese girlfriend. We are planning to get married soon and afterwards we plan to start the procedures so that she can obtain a residence permit in my home country (Belgium) since we plan to move there next year. After my preliminary research there are still a few things that are not yet clear so I'm hoping to find some people here that can help me, at least with some of my questions. 1. I plan to obtain a "certificate of marriagability" from my embassy. This seems to be the main document I need to be able to get married (aside from my passport). The embassy seems to provide a Chinese translation. Does this document still need to be legalized by some Chinese authority? 2. My girlfriend is from Dalian but we currently live in a small town in Hubei, and since her hukou is now in Wuhan we will need to get married there. Does anybody have experience with marrying in Wuhan, preferably recently? It seems some cities have their own rules about the required documents, I wonder if Wuhan is one of them. 3. At a later stage, after we are married and are preparing to apply for her visa to move to Belgium, we will also need to obtain her birth certificate. It is currently very unclear where we will be able to obtain this. I doubt that they would still have records of her birth in the hospital where she was born in Dalian. I read somewhere that maybe her hukou office should also be able to provide such a document, but since her hukou is now in Wuhan, I'm not sure if that will be the case. I'm not even sure whether they will know what a birth certificate is. 4. Once we have our marriage certificate and her birth certificate, we should have it legalized by a public notary office and then authenticated by the foreign affairs bureau. How long would both of these steps take? Does the notary office provide an English translation or do we have to have the documents translated before we go there? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help us see things more clearly. Quote
