疼痛苦

疼痛 and 痛苦 are in the dictionaries, but I can't find an explanation of the three characters together, and if you google it it appears to be quite common. Jukuu gives some sentences using 疼痛. Is it slang? What part of speech is it and how do you use it correctly?

Ex1:他病倒了,躺在床上呻吟着,这种疼痛之苦折磨着他没日没夜。

Ex2:他和爱人分开一段时间了,分隔两地的相思,这种精神上的疼痛之苦让他夜不成寐。

疼痛之苦可以指精神上也可以指肉体上。

一般来说疼痛指肉体上,而痛苦指精神上。

Nomally, 疼痛 can substitute for 疼痛之苦 in conversation. But if you‘d like to emphasis on "苦" (bitterness, suffering), you might want to use 疼痛之苦.

Using the example posted by crystal123 #4, you can also say:

Ex1: 他病倒了,躺在床上呻吟着,这种疼痛没日没夜的折磨着他。

Ex2: 他和爱人分开一段时间了,分隔两地的相思,这种精神上的疼痛让他夜不成寐。
