anonymoose Posted August 19, 2012 at 08:48 PM Report Share Posted August 19, 2012 at 08:48 PM As anyone who has read a Chinese grammar book should know, the 把 structure is used to indicate how something is disposed of, and therefore the verb involved should include a complement of result (even if it is simply 了). However, I have just seen this sentence: 鉴于我对小猫的喜爱,我是日间喂它三餐食、夜间常把猫砂换,还怕俊照顾不周到,我亲自桩桩件件来照料 Is it acceptable to use only 换 in the 把 construction? I know one could also say 换掉 or 换新, thereby explicitly stating a result, but I'm just curious as to whether in the original sentence the result is implicitly understood (as it's obvious what is meant anyway), and therefore need not be stated, or whether this considered to be poor grammar. Any comments appreciated.
andysun731 Posted August 20, 2012 at 01:23 AM Report Share Posted August 20, 2012 at 01:23 AM It seems like a classical usage imitating some kind of classical poetry pattern or something else. It's OK in writing, but we rarely speak like this in our daily life.
unicar Posted August 20, 2012 at 03:49 AM Report Share Posted August 20, 2012 at 03:49 AM I agree with Andy, however I think this kind of expression is quite common in Chinese, actually it's a kind of rhetorical inversion which can be applied to most of the verb-object phrases. For examples, 跳舞=把舞跳,唱歌=把歌唱. All we have to do is to put the object after "把", and then the actual verb at the end. But, yes, we rarely speak like that. They often appear in some poems for the need of rhyme.
