anonymoose Posted February 9, 2005 at 01:01 PM Report Posted February 9, 2005 at 01:01 PM The best material depends on what your short-term and long-term goals are. If you want a firm grounding in Chinese, with the intential of taking it to an advance level, then I suggest you start with Basic Chinese: A Grammar and Workbook by Yip Po-Ching and Don Rimmington (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0415160375/qid=1107953652/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-1530704-1224735?v=glance&s=books). This is the book I started with, and whilst it by no means covers everything you will need to know, if you can work through to the end of this book, I think you will have a very solid start. However, you cannot really learn to speak just by using such a book. If your intention is just to get started with speaking as soon as possible, then you are probably better off going for something with accompanying cassettes or CDs. Quote
