fanglu Posted September 3, 2012 at 10:51 PM Report Share Posted September 3, 2012 at 10:51 PM How can I translate 'protects against' as in 'this vaccine protects against rabies'? The best I could come up with was 这种预防针是为了以免狂犬病的, but there must be a better way of expressing it.
skylee Posted September 3, 2012 at 11:01 PM Report Share Posted September 3, 2012 at 11:01 PM Consider "這種疫苗是用來預防狂犬病的".
Glenn Posted September 3, 2012 at 11:17 PM Report Share Posted September 3, 2012 at 11:17 PM What function does 種 have here? I see that it has a meaning as a verb of injecting a vaccine into the body to prevent disease (把疫苗注入人體內以預防疾病。), but it doesn't make sense to me as a verb here. I thought it was "type/kind" originally ("this kind of vaccine"), but that wasn't in the English version, and I'm assuming that was on purpose. skylee Posted September 3, 2012 at 11:45 PM Report Share Posted September 3, 2012 at 11:45 PM 種 here means type/kind. You can drop it if you don't want it. There is no confusion as the context is clear. And 種 is pronounced differently for the two meanings.
