New Members meowmeow Posted September 9, 2012 at 02:19 AM New Members Report Posted September 9, 2012 at 02:19 AM Hi, I am an chinese-american with family living in china and I get 1-year multiple-entry 3-month duration tourist visas each time I apply. This is quite good already as its so easy to get the visa (just mail in a form with photos). I have been working under-the-table with a company for a couple years now, and I never bothered to have it officialized (its more of a commission-style setup versus salary). The company has said they could give me a 3-year contract and get me a working visa, but I am wondering if it is worth the trouble or not. I would have to travel to their province, do the application and medical exam there, and this would take around 2 days probably. I would probably get a working visa for 3 years, but I was wondering what the duration of each stay would be, would it be the same as my current tourist visa (90 days?) or would it be most likely no duration (I could stay 3 years without ever leaving). I also heard that once I got the first 3 year visa, it would be easy to get another extension, say for 5 years, should the company wish to renew a 5 year contract and that I wouldn't need to go and visit their province. Can you guys let me know if the duration on the working visa would be longer than 90 days? If so, I would only consider going if I were planning to stay longer than 90 days in a single visit, since exitting and re-entering is a hassle, and I would just spend that time going to the province and getting the medical+Application done. Also, how long would this process take? I am here already around 45 days so I have only 45 more days to get this done. Quote
abcdefg Posted September 10, 2012 at 06:39 AM Report Posted September 10, 2012 at 06:39 AM I can't answer all parts of your question, since I don't have that kind of visa myself. But I can help you a little bit. I would probably get a working visa for 3 years, but I was wondering what the duration of each stay would be, would it be the same as my current tourist visa (90 days?) or would it be most likely no duration (I could stay 3 years without ever leaving). Your employer helps you get a work visa which is then converted to a "temporary residence permit." That residence permit doesn't have a fixed duration of each stay. You can stay in China continuously for it's entire term. It does, however, allow multiple exits and re-entries if you desire them. Quote
anonymoose Posted September 10, 2012 at 08:32 AM Report Posted September 10, 2012 at 08:32 AM You should be able to get a residence permit which allows you to stay without leaving for the duration of the permit. Quote

If it ensures that you are fully compliant with the law at no personal cost, then yes, it is probably worth it. Quote
