Sound Change of The Interjection "a"

Standard Hanzi (PRC):啊

Non-standard Variant Hanzi: 呵 or 吖

Mandarin pronunciation: ā á ǎ à a

Basic Usage: Interjection

Pinyin = IPA

ê = [ɛ]

nga = [ŋa]

ya = [ja]

za = [tsa]

va = [va] / [ʋa]

ra = [ɻa]

ea = [γa]

Assimilation (同化)

  • (-n) + a = na
  • (-ng) + a = nga
  • (iü) + a = ya
  • (uao、iao) + a = wa
    • Except "fu", see below...

    [*](fu) + a = va

    [*][ʐ̩] + a = za

    • As in [zi ci si]

    [*][ɨ / z̩] (er) + a = ra

    • As in [zhi chi shi]

Dissimilation (异化)

  • (aê) + a = ya

Assimilation / Dissimilation (同化、异化两可)

  • If Assimilation
    • (o、uo) + a = wa
    • (e) + a = ea

    [*]If Dissimilation

    • (o、uo) + a = va
    • (e) + a = ya

I made this post In case anyone is wondering why native speakers are pronouncing the interjection differently. By the way, I'm not sure knowing the sound change rules are necessary because most speakers already do this unconsciously.

I'm sure many of us know about this, but only in a writing context where some people change the character to 呀, 哇, etc.
