New Members xiong_mao Posted September 23, 2012 at 11:15 PM New Members Report Posted September 23, 2012 at 11:15 PM 你好, I am planning on getting a quarter sleeve tattoo of a fox demon, or 狐狸精; kitsune, gumiho. I have included an image of the fox I will be getting, I feel it is a beautiful piece of art. I like the way they are portrayed as wise and mischievous in ancient folklore. However, it has come to my attention that huli jing has negative connotations now and is used as a derogatory term similar to 'slut' towards women in modern Chinese culture. I am wondering if anyone here believes I will be looked down on or offend people with this image-- as it is not my intention. What are the normal uses of the term, and as a woman, is this a shameful gesture? I view fox demons as independent and resourceful but I am of course approaching it from an American perspective. I know that some are morally good, bad, or ambiguous. Any clarification would be appreciated, 谢谢你。 Quote
renzhe Posted September 24, 2012 at 01:16 PM Report Posted September 24, 2012 at 01:16 PM I only know it as a derogatory term in modern Chinese. If you're called a 狐狸精, it's not positive at all. Quote
creamyhorror Posted September 24, 2012 at 06:34 PM Report Posted September 24, 2012 at 06:34 PM It's a Japanese cultural reference, so keep the style Japanese and Chinese people will hopefully not associate it with the Chinese term huli jing 狐狸精. 狐狸精 is used to insult the third woman in a relationship, a husband-snatcher, etc. Quote

If there is any other information any could provide it would be appreciated. It's just that I am learning mandarin and want to teach abroad one day but am hoping to avoid having a big sign over my head that reads "idiot" for this tattoo. I really do love the art of it and just wanted to know whether a Chinese person would view it as particularly ignorant or distasteful. Quote
