two words that are difficult to translate

Recommended Posts

I want to try and translate two words into English and would appreciate any suggestions.

缘分 yuanfen

Some people would simply translate it as fate or destiny, but these words have certain connotations in English and I don't believe they reflect the true meaning of the word. Perhaps something using karma, but again I think many people misunderstand this word.

气质 qizhi

I am looking for a translation in the context of certain undefinable qualities that a man finds attractive in a woman.

Word-for-word translation doesn't work here. "a predestined affinity" (e.g,. ...to meet) is a fair dictionary definition, but no one speakes that way. "Fated to meet" sounds too romantic for many contexts. "We seem destined to keep running into each other" is probably pretty good, for non-romantic contexts.

For 气质 qi4zhi2 (the pronunciation here in Taiwan, BTW), try perhaps "I like her style", or "she's got class", 'the way she carries herself', 'her elegant bearing", "he was attracted to her demeanor, her style, her spirit, the way she carried herself" and so on.

Another possibility: you qizhi = is attractive
