Chao Feng

Can anyone tell me something about the Chao Feng, please (Yes. I know it is supposed to be one of the Sons of the Dragon, but I want to know much more.)

In particular, I want to know why it is the placed as the first beast on the figures on the eaves of the buildings in the Forbidden City behind the immortal on a Feng Huang. Why is it there?

It is usually referred to as a dragon but it is not a dragon as such.

Looks like there are different versions of the "9 sons of the dragon". Here is one version -

龍生九子古時民間有“龍生九子，不成龍，各有所好”的傳說。但九子是什麼，說法也不同。《中國吉祥圖說》謂：九子之老大叫囚牛，喜音樂，蹲立於琴頭；老二叫睚眥，嗜殺喜鬥，刻鏤於刀環、劍柄吞口；老三叫嘲風，平生好險，今殿角走獸是其遺像；四子蒲牢，受擊就大聲吼叫，充作洪鐘提梁的獸鈕，助其鳴聲遠揚；五子狻猊，形如獅，喜煙好坐，倚立於香爐足上，隨之吞煙吐霧；六子贔屭，似龜有齒，喜歡負重，碑下龜是也；七子狴犴，形似虎好訟，獄門或官衙正堂兩側有其像；八子負質，身似龍，雅好斯文，盤繞在石碑頭頂；老九螭吻，又名鴟尾或鴟吻，口潤嗓粗而好吞，遂成殿脊兩端的吞脊獸，取其滅火消災。

龍生九子：

龍生九子皆不成龍，各有所好，且各有所用。

贔 屭（音備喜，長子）：

形似龜或螭虎，喜愛背負重物。常出現在石碑下、牆腳、金爐腳、桌腳等處。

螭 吻（音癡穩，次子） ：

形似獸。生性好望遠，常立於屋簷、殿脊，以當守衛。又好冒險，可滅火災。

蒲 牢（音樸勞，三子） ：

形似龍。生性好鳴，常為鐘上上獸紐。

狴 犴（音幣岸，四子）：

形似虎。有威力，生性好辯，常立於獄門或禁告示碑。

饕 餮（音滔帖，五子）：

生性好食，立於鼎蓋。

蚆 蝮（音葩夏，六子）：

生性好水，常立於橋柱。

睚 眥（音崖疵，七子）：

生性好殺，多為刀劍吞口。

狻 猊（音酸倪，八子）：

形似獅，生性好煙火，常立於香爐雙耳處。

椒 圖（音嬌圖，九子）：

形似螺蚌，生性好閑。常立於門首。一說為龍之第七個女兒。
