Grammar question: 你的名字是怎么取的 or ...取地?

On QQ one of my friends said:

你的名字是怎么取的?

Then he changed it to:

你的名字是怎么取

He claimed the latter is correct. I disagree. Who's right? I thought 地 is only used to create an adverb...

Many years ago, 地 is used before a verb, 得 is used before an adjective and 的 is used before a noun. But now, people almost replace the other two with 的.

In this case, 的 is correct even under the older practice.

@tooironic: The structure here is 是...的.
