Kenny同志 Posted November 2, 2012 at 06:23 AM Report Share Posted November 2, 2012 at 06:23 AM The Legal Faults With Faulty China Translations from the China Law Blog is worth reading. quoted from the article: Good legal translators are incredibly rare. When it comes to selecting a translator for your contract, insist on experience and specialization. The best solution — by far — is a truly bilingual attorney who works just for you. imron Posted November 2, 2012 at 06:35 AM Report Share Posted November 2, 2012 at 06:35 AM I am working in a law firm don't ask me go pay someone, this is disgraceful Does your law firm write up contracts for free? Why should you expect translators to translate something that is obviously of a commercial nature (and incidentally, a non-trivial piece of work) without any compensation?
edelweis Posted November 2, 2012 at 07:08 AM Report Share Posted November 2, 2012 at 07:08 AM @anthisan: please don't be offended. This forum is mainly for quick (short) translations, people who translate do it on their free time. If you can't pay a translator, perhaps you can find a Chinese student at your university, who could help you translate it in exchange for English tutoring or something. edelweis Posted November 2, 2012 at 11:14 AM Report Share Posted November 2, 2012 at 11:14 AM Well then, perhaps a native English speaking student could help you translate, in exchange for Chinese language tutoring Find a law student who minors in Chinese, or a student who majors in Chinese with a specialty of legal translation or something... [edit] here is another idea: split the text into small parts, translate each small part, then go to Lang-8 and post the translation with the original text. Then native speakers will correct your English. English speakers who learn Chinese might correct your English-to-Chinese translation. Perhaps there might be someone with experience in writing contracts in English. Don't forget to correct other people's Chinese in exchange. Of course you can't be certain of the quality of the final text (both the English and the legal aspects could be wrong). But anyway, unless you pay a professional translator who specialises in legal documents and contracts, you can never be sure of the quality of the translation... Shelley Posted November 2, 2012 at 11:47 AM Report Share Posted November 2, 2012 at 11:47 AM I am confused, if you work for a law firm surely they would consider it part of their normal business to pay for documents to be translated. If you are Chinese, may I be so bold as ask why you can't do it. You say you have tried but no success? I think that people on this forum are usually very helpful but are not keen on doing what appears to be someone's job so that they will get paid for it but not the people who gave up their time and knowledge from this forum to do the actual work. There is bound to be translation services available somewhere near you, or as suggested a student who will do it for a small fee. Also you say you have tried, if you had posted your efforts and asked for help/corrections there may have been more help offered. Posting your efforts is always appreciated by the members of this forum from what i have seen.
tooironic Posted November 2, 2012 at 01:49 PM Report Share Posted November 2, 2012 at 01:49 PM I agree with imron. Anthisan, you shouldn't expect someone on an online forum would be willing to translate a lengthy commercial document for you free of charge. It's common sense. And even if they did there would likely be accuracy issues, since a considerable level of expertise would be required to produce a workable and authentic target text of this kind, and that is a rare skill to find. Then again, I'm surprised such a request got through, but I don't suppose we have rules against how long and complicated translation requests can be on this forum. imron Posted November 2, 2012 at 03:39 PM Report Share Posted November 2, 2012 at 03:39 PM Then again, I'm surprised such a request got through, As the person who let it through, sometimes things get let through to let people know they are being unreasonable/unrealistic.
