addeGG Posted November 18, 2012 at 09:20 AM Report Share Posted November 18, 2012 at 09:20 AM Hello all. The other day I saw my classmate use "Pleco" on his iPad or whatever it was and I asked what it was, I've heard of Pleco before but I didnt know it was a that good software... I tried to install it on my phone but I have a phone that can only run Android 2.1, and I need at least Android 2.2 to be able to install Pleco. I have dictionary on my phone though and then I am doing flashcards the old school way: 自己用笔写. What I lack from a software like Pleco though is the examples they give you when you look up a word. For example you look up 下雨 and pleco gives you not only the english direct translation but also an example of how to use it: 外面下雨了。 So I am looking for some kind of website or so that has this kind of "usage examples"... I know google translate has this. But google translate is giving you VERY complicated examples all the time, very complicated. So does someone know of any other site? If not, does someone know any very cheap device I can buy just to use for Pleco? Thanks
Arreat Posted November 18, 2012 at 09:53 AM Report Share Posted November 18, 2012 at 09:53 AM Hey! Just pick up a dictionary which Chinese used to learn English! Like Longman or Oxford which in Chinese is 朗文高级英汉双解词典 and 牛津高级英汉双解词典. When you meet a Chinese word you don't know, you look it up with Google. For example, you don't know what's the meaning of 下雨 in English, then you google it. Now you know it means rain. Then you look it up in the dictionary I mentioned before. You will see a lot of short examples like "it's raining outside/外面下雨了". Is it just easy and cheap? :-) Here is another tip: try google any Chinese word you don't know with keyword: <random Chinese word> 英文, and that's it. You will see a huge amount of examples..........Good luck!
