Kai13 Posted November 18, 2012 at 10:46 AM Report Posted November 18, 2012 at 10:46 AM Hey, I'm now living in Japan and have quite a few chinese in my class. I arrived here 2 months ago. And due to cultural differences and me not understanding and not corresponding to chinese habits my friend got angy and is avoiding me, is not talking to me. I really would like to be friends again, but don't know what to do. She is 3 years older than me and was kind of acting like a mother to me, but I really did not understand that behavior, now I do, but I think it's too late. Besides. Why is every asian people able to read other people's 気? I also want this skill, what should I do? How can I avoid being read? And I'm not talking about face expressions and voice, I'm talking about that energy that comes out of you that the asian can sense. Quote

fanglu Posted November 19, 2012 at 05:24 AM Report Posted November 19, 2012 at 05:24 AM How can I avoid being read? I'm the first to admit I'm not an expert, but from my understanding, the trick is to think very hard about a particular thing all the time. This will create an effective block. One thing I'm not sure about is whether it makes a difference what you think about. I recommend you experiment with a few different mental images, keeping them in your mind all day for a few days each, and see which one works best. You should report back here afterwards. Quote
liuzhou Posted November 19, 2012 at 07:18 AM Report Posted November 19, 2012 at 07:18 AM You know, every time someone says that "All X can Y" as in "all Asians can read your mind", it is 100% guaranteed to be complete nonsense. It is called 'stereotyping' and is stupid and often also racist. What kind of answer do you expect? You haven't said anything other than someone is less than happy with you for some undisclosed reason. Story of my life. 1 Quote

You know, every time someone starts a sentence with "you know", that sentence is false. 1 Quote
liuzhou Posted November 19, 2012 at 09:08 AM Report Posted November 19, 2012 at 09:08 AM You know, every time someone starts a sentence with "you know", that sentence is false. Drivel. Every time I calculate 4+4, the answer is 8. Every time I eat prawns I spend the rest of the day vomiting. Every time I get on a public bus I have to pay. Every time I want to open my apartment door I have to use my key. Every time I ask the Bank of China for a loan, they say "No". There is a big difference between simple statements of fact and wild generalisations. I'm talking about that energy that comes out of you that the asian can sense. Come on! 1 Quote
daofeishi Posted November 19, 2012 at 09:22 AM Report Posted November 19, 2012 at 09:22 AM Drivel. If you read that sentence again, you might find that I've already agreed with you. Quote
Hofmann Posted November 19, 2012 at 09:24 AM Report Posted November 19, 2012 at 09:24 AM Ummmm............. All humans emit infrared light. However, it takes some additional equipment (more than naked eyes) to detect it. Quote
liuzhou Posted November 19, 2012 at 09:36 AM Report Posted November 19, 2012 at 09:36 AM If you read that sentence again, you might find that I've already agreed with you. Well. I apologise. It was rather convoluted. 1 Quote

felixfan87 Posted November 21, 2012 at 06:34 AM Report Posted November 21, 2012 at 06:34 AM I've been living im China for 2 years, and I don't feel like I've ever been read, in fact I feel like I read Chinese better than they read me. In any case, it sounds like a sensitive situation, but could you add a few more details, that would make it easier for others to make suggestions. Quote

eslang Posted November 23, 2012 at 07:34 AM Report Posted November 23, 2012 at 07:34 AM In some sense, I think I have an idea what the OP is refering to about 気. In Japan, there is a coined-word called KY語. KY is the abbreivated form for 空気読めない (Kuuki Yomenai) --> http://discover-jp.blogspot.jp/2007/09/japanese-slang-ky.html Perhaps the OP can elaborate further about "me not understanding and not corresponding to chinese habits my friend got angry" -- was it something to do with her habits that you have made a harsh remark or somewhat put her down in front of the others?
