I know quite a few who have passed HSK5 and 6 and have trouble being understood by native Chinese speakers in everyday conversation, as well as a few who have not taken any tests and speak very good Chinese. Yes but my point was unlike the CEFR tests for european languages they don't even test your ability to speak at all. You can take the oral test separately though but you can get HSK 6 or whatever without uttering a word in Chinese. You certainly can't do that with languages like French and German. Quote
