Ailuo Posted November 19, 2012 at 12:40 PM Report Share Posted November 19, 2012 at 12:40 PM Ok, so my Aunt wants to get a tatoo of Chinese characters. She wants the words "compassion" and "tolerance". I am not sure which characters would be the best, and I don't want to tell her something wrong. Can you help? fanglu Posted November 19, 2012 at 10:35 PM Report Share Posted November 19, 2012 at 10:35 PM To keep it simple you could suggest 慈 (compassion) 忍 (tolerance).
smurese Posted November 20, 2012 at 02:42 AM Report Share Posted November 20, 2012 at 02:42 AM Yes, might be some Buddhist influence there. Not sure if your aunt got the inspiration for having the Chinese for "compassion" and "tolerance" from seeing this kind of thing around the streets where she lives or some Buddhist teachings she's heard: [ http://tinyurl.com/cxh9olq ] [ http://tinyurl.com/cr5sdqu ] [ http://tinyurl.com/bnho8qw ] (it might be surprising that these slogans can be, depending on the circumstances, somewhat controversial or dangerous...). In those examples, the Chinese characters used were 善 shàn "compassion", and 忍 rěn "tolerance/forbearance/patience". I've seen 忍 rěn used on some Chinese tattoos: [ http://theworsthorse.../bodyvows1.html ] [ http://anhhhy.tumblr...ost/31326969061 ]
