Yes, might be some Buddhist influence there. Not sure if your aunt got the inspiration for having the Chinese for "compassion" and "tolerance" from seeing this kind of thing around the streets where she lives or some Buddhist teachings she's heard: [ http://tinyurl.com/cxh9olq ] [ http://tinyurl.com/cr5sdqu ] [ http://tinyurl.com/bnho8qw ] (it might be surprising that these slogans can be, depending on the circumstances, somewhat controversial or dangerous...).

In those examples, the Chinese characters used were 善 shàn "compassion", and 忍 rěn "tolerance/forbearance/patience".

I've seen 忍 rěn used on some Chinese tattoos:
