magores Posted February 18, 2005 at 05:35 PM Report Share Posted February 18, 2005 at 05:35 PM Translating the two words individually is simple enough, but I was wondering if there is another word/words/phrase that captures the "concept" of Mother Nature better. If it helps, the American Heritage dictionary defines Mother Nature as: Noun. The personification of nature as a powerful and nurturing woman. Thanks in advance, Magores
marcopolo79 Posted February 18, 2005 at 06:42 PM Report Share Posted February 18, 2005 at 06:42 PM This concept doesn't translate too well into Chinese, I think you're best off using 大自然 if you want to refer to the natural world or 天 if you want to talk about the personification of an omnipresent force that exerts an influence on people's lives through nature and nurture. xiaocai Posted February 26, 2005 at 07:54 AM Report Share Posted February 26, 2005 at 07:54 AM 自然之母 is really an odd expression sounds strange to me, seldom saw this usage. 大塊 is such a lyric word, romantic (李白 used it). I think there is another corresponding word 造化 as in 杜甫's 望嶽, "造化鍾神秀,隂陽割昏曉".
