ShaneInNOLA Posted November 29, 2012 at 07:15 AM Report Share Posted November 29, 2012 at 07:15 AM Hello! I am trying to understand this Character. It's from an autograph. I do not read Chinese and have had some amateurish luck translating the rest of the characters involved using the internet, but this one is eluding me. It sort of looks (to my entirely untrained eye) like a combination of the character for "metal" and something like the character for "eternal." However, feel free to disregard that as I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. What I am hoping for is an explanation of the meaning of this character and it would be a bonus if someone could point me to a font-based copy of the character I could cut and paste it into a Word document as a single character (for purposes of an article I am writing where I want to reference the autograph). I attached two copies of the character, same author, two different autographs. Don't mind the line at the very bottom of the first scan. It's just from where the whole thing was underlined. Thank you all so much. Shane
skylee Posted November 29, 2012 at 11:44 AM Report Share Posted November 29, 2012 at 11:44 AM It does look like what you described. Take a look -> http://ctext.org/dictionary.pl?if=gb&char=%F0%A8%A5%AD PS - and this too -> http://dict.variants.moe.edu.tw/yitib/frb/frb05296.htm
OneEye Posted November 29, 2012 at 12:00 PM Report Share Posted November 29, 2012 at 12:00 PM It looks like 銢 to me. I don't know if that will show up here or not though. Seems to be a pretty rare character, and I could only find it in one dictionary (the MOE Dictionary of Chinese Character Variants, which cites some dictionary called the 龍龕手鑑). It's pronounced pǐ, and it apparently refers to a cleaver or something similar. Edit: Beaten to it by skylee.

ShaneInNOLA Posted November 29, 2012 at 09:17 PM Author Report Share Posted November 29, 2012 at 09:17 PM Guys, Thanks so much! Based on the picture at the top of the second website posted by skylee and other examples I have of this author's handwriting, I feel pretty confident that is the correct character. I really appreciate the help. Shane
