China Development Brief - English reporting on civil society in China

China Development Brief as an organisation goes way back, and I suspect many of our members have come across it in the past - they gave me some of my very first paid translation work, and I helped them build a website or two, for a start.

They've had their ups and downs in recent years, notably their head guy being told he can't come back in to China as he was threat to national security or social order or some such nonsense.

However, they've recently rejigged their website and now appear to be pumping out an impressive amount of English language content on China's civil society. Just pulling a selection of headlines off the front page as it stands, we have:

"Between Heaven and Hell: Grassroots NGOs in Central China"

"Laos’ Ban Chim Village: The First Partnership Between a Chinese NGO and a Chinese Company Overseas"

"The developing trend of government contracting of NGO services"

And so on. It's a mix of their own content and descriptions of Chinese articles which you may then want to read.

Well worth keeping an eye on.

They also have jobs and volunteer translation opportunities - this is probably one of the better ways to build up a portfolio...

Thanks for the info. It appears that they aren't accepting volunteer translators. The link you provided works, but the "CDB Translators" link on their website doesn't. It worked around the time of your post. I sent an email to Mr. Shieh but he hasn't replied.

Staying somewhat on topic . . . do you have other suggestions for building up a portfolio? I need a Plan B.
