techie Posted November 12, 2003 at 09:00 PM Report Posted November 12, 2003 at 09:00 PM Hello all, If anybody knows where to obtain this book or knows or someone who might want to sell this book, please let me know. I am trying to obtain this "old" book for a professor friend of mine who needs it. Even though I have advised him to look for more modern books, he insists that that is the book he needs and wants. Thanks in advance for any of your information or responses. regards [moving out of Suggestions/Announcements. Roddy] Quote
beijingbooty Posted November 13, 2003 at 09:31 PM Report Posted November 13, 2003 at 09:31 PM just do a search on google. There many places which still sell this book. Quote
techie Posted November 14, 2003 at 01:40 AM Author Report Posted November 14, 2003 at 01:40 AM Beijingbooty, thanks so much for the suggestions but I have already done that for my friend. Trust me when I tell you that they do not have it because the book is out of print. To complicate matters there are many versions of the same book which may be available but are not the appropriate one. For example: The Advanced Reader by John DeFrancis comes in the following formats: 1) Advanced Character Text which is nothing more than the Chinese version of the 2)Advance Chinese textbook (this is in Pinyin or Romanized format) and finally there is the 3) Advance Chinese Reader (which is the one I am looking for my friend.)This one is more character learning (traditional chinese) at the advanced level! Now I hope you understand why this is so confusing! Thanks again. And of course if you do find the "Advance Chinese Reader" book by John DeFrancis anyplace, do let me know so that I can notify my friend. Regards Quote
techie Posted November 14, 2003 at 01:50 AM Author Report Posted November 14, 2003 at 01:50 AM I just wanted to add the John DeFrancis page as a sort of information to show the various books he published: http://www.wenlin.com/jdf.htm or simply here is a listing of some of these books: Volumes by John DeFrancis in the Yale Language Series Beginning Chinese (Textbook in Pinyin) Character Text for Beginning Chinese Beginning Chinese Reader (Parts I and II) Intermediate Chinese (Textbook in Pinyin) Character Text for Intermediate Chinese Intermediate Chinese Reader (Parts I and II) Advanced Chinese (Textbook in Pinying) Character Text for Advanced Chinese Advanced Chinese Reader In addition if anyone has any of the following tapes (casettes) let me know! Cassettes are the standard cassette variety, C-60 or C-90 depending on the length of the original master recording. I contacted Language Services at Seton Hall University but the prices for these casettes, for such old books are quite high. This is what I found out. Seton Hall University South Orange, NJ 07079-26 LANGUAGE SERVICES SETON HALL UNIVERSITY SOUTH ORANGE, NEW JERSEY 07079-2696 (973) 761-9457 PRICE SCHEDULE PRICES FOR COMPLETE SETS OF CASSETTES TITLE PRICE TITLE PRICE Beginning Chinese $120 Beginning Chinese Reader $68 (See Key for explanation) (17 hours) Intermediate Chinese (40 $160 Intermediate Chinese Reader (28 $112 hours) hours) Advanced Chinese (29 hours) $116 Advanced Chinese Reader (25 hours) $100 (Or perhaps if there are other Chinese learners with these books who are also interested in these casettes, maybe we can share expenses) Thanks again for your reading and input. techie Posted November 18, 2003 at 08:07 PM Author Report Posted November 18, 2003 at 08:07 PM I made the same mistake the other day and almost sent my old professor the wrong book. I realize the specific book is hard to find (out of print). I appreciate your input. Regards Quote
