Chinese Motorcycles and the Culture...

Well, I have almost secured my job in Beijing, China this summer with a motorcycle company. I am wondering what the motorcycle culture is like in China. I was in Tianjin this past summer and made a few trips to Beijing. In all honesty I didn't see a heck of a lot of bikers. I asked my laoshi's and they said many of the bikers are from Southern China or are Japanese. Does China have anything that resembles the US's Harley Davidson lifestyle? What about the Hells Angels? The company I am applying to is actually the Chrome Horse based in Beijing and they are said to import Harley Davidison motorcycles. I am wondering what type of crowd I am going to be running around with... I hope it is interesting but I don't want to end up in a Chinese prison or anything. What about obtaining my motorcycle license in China? How hard is it... I'm sure they have connections but how much does it cost?

I am moving to Beijing and was wondering if motorcycles are the way to go...and what kind of bikes are good there. My woman friends cringe and whine that I'm gonna die if I try to ride in China. Whatever...born to be wild, baby!! So I am curious about makes, licensing and insurance, and so on also... 8)

Hi guys! I only wish I were in your shoes and able to ride my scooter in China. Alas, it (and probably I, will never make it to the mainland. But I can always dream. As popular as Harley's are in Japan, surely the motorcycle trend is slowly making it's way to 中国. If you're still on this side of the Pacific do you think the Chinese consulate have any helpful information on driving/riding in China? Might be worthwhile to check it out. I have a Harley parked out in my garage. Even gave it a Chinese name...走猪 - "Runnin' Hog". If you can use 2-wheels over there, ride SAFE and pray that the gas stations sell premium! 慢走!

here in GuangZhou it's difficult to get a licence because the goverment consider it to be a "hazard" to the traffic, now, no motor is allowed to run on the main road any more :wall

I think the attitude to motorcycles is different to China. People like Hells Angels seem to thrive on rebellion, and living outside normal culture, I don't think you'd find many Chinese who'd want to do that. Plus if you can afford a Harley, you can afford a car, so I think most people prefer the status symbol of a car.

The majority of bikes I saw in China were variants of the Honda CG 125, it's very hard to do anything rebellious on a bike like that.

They also have the crazy motorcycle helmets that are no more than a plastic builders helmet.

You do occassionaly see things that make you smile e.g. an entire family of 4 riding around on 1 motorbike, the kids sitting on the tank in front of the dad, and the mum riding pillion.

Well... I have now been in China for two weeks. I can tell you the motorcycle industry is picking up here. I have already ridden on the Chinese roads. They have Biker clubs here the same as they do in the US and they DO have big bikes. It is all on a MUCH smaller scale though when compared to other countries. If you want to license a big bike you definitely need to have some connections.

My cousin used to ride a big bike in Guangzhou, but the city gov banned it, and he was forced to sell it cheap.

Some cities have banned petrol driven motorcycles on the grounds of improving air polution. Electric varieties usually are okay though.
