Reccommended mandarin singers...

Recommended Posts

Posted

As I'm learning mandarin I thought listening to mandarin songs/movies might help with my pronounciation. I've heard of some of the bigger chinese/taiwanese singers like faye wong, amei and coco lee but I'm not sure who sings in mandarin and I can't really tell the difference between dialects yet ^_^ I was wondering if anyone could recommend any mandarin singers I could try listening too.

music isn't really the best way to learn the language (compared to plain old studying) but I find S.H.E. pop songs to be nice :D

Zhang Yu (Phil Chang) and Zhang Xueyou (Jacky Cheung) seem to follow the tones pretty well in their songs, which might be helpful.

I like 張宇 and 張學友, though they may not be the best models for learning Mandarin. (Do note that the former also sings in Minnan dialect, and the latter in Cantonese.)

汪峰 - 妈妈

http://218.93.16.95/gkiytr4/cn/dl1/w/wf/01/011.wma

lyric

there, now you can sing along.

汪峰 - 美丽世界的孤儿

http://219.153.7.151:8576//265mu2/0252/5.wma

lyric

music isn't really the best way to learn the language

If you mean instead of pen'n'paper studying, then I'd certainly agree.

But I find songs to be quite a good addition to study. When not actually in China, good material to practice listening is not easy to come by, and the texts that come with my books are boring at best, more commonly frustrating.

The drawback about songs is that keys are even more difficult to learn, but I find them to be very helpful to identify certain commonly used disyllabic words (if you listen to Mandopop, you'll have mastered 爱情 and 哭泣 in a sec!).

As to songs, I listen to a whole variety, favorites being Andy Lau (not recommendable for language study, though), Zhang Huimei, the occasioall Faye Wong...

HI Korndorian!

I've tried the links to your files, but they're tiny like 70kb and my players require some sort of plug-in; so i install them and they still don't work... help :help:conf

I really want to listen to chinese modern music i.e. pop and rock WITH lyrics... but it's so difficult to find them for me... would be grateful if you assisted.

TY

This was an old post but could someone please check if this pinyin transcription seem good for the song posted by korndorian, I got quite a few ambiguities, so not sure if my choice of pronunication and word split is OK. The audio link above is still active.

I am posting pinyin just to check if the pronunciation and tones are correct, for some characters can be pronounced differently depneding on the position and meaning.

I used Wenlin to convert to pinyin and segment by words but offered multiple choices in some cases.

Not too worried about tone sandhi or interjectons, only if there are obvious errors.

What about Jay Chou/周杰伦? He's the most famous mandarin singer now, probably. Jolin Tsai/蔡依林, his former girlfriend is also very famous. I love them both. 王蓉 I like better than the above two, but most people like those two best. It depends on what genre you are into most. 周杰伦 is like almost on the top of the hottest singers list.
