langxia Posted January 14, 2013 at 06:44 PM Report Posted January 14, 2013 at 06:44 PM Hi, the new year is comming up and due to recent pollution in Beijing I am thinking about offering my future mother in law an air purifier. I allready talked about it with my girlfriend and she thinks it is a great idea. Now I am looking at which one to buy and where to buy it. I live in Europe and could at the moment buy it in Germany, France or Austria as I have the possibility to get to those countrys before I leave to china in February. Now my question does anyone have expirience with Honeywell air purifiers or delonghi air purifiers? Or should I wait and buy it in china ? I tried to look into prices and it seems to me that they are less expensive in Europe. Quote
imron Posted January 14, 2013 at 11:43 PM Report Posted January 14, 2013 at 11:43 PM If you are doing it to impress your future mother in law, buy the foreign (made) one. 1 Quote
icebear Posted January 15, 2013 at 01:34 AM Report Posted January 15, 2013 at 01:34 AM Blueair and IQAir are the most "prestigious" brands among foreigners and well-moneyed Chinese. Quote
lechuan Posted January 16, 2013 at 02:57 AM Report Posted January 16, 2013 at 02:57 AM I have an IQ Air Health Pro Plus (I have a cat and cat/seasonal allergies). It works really well, and lets me sleep at night (and breathe!) during allergy season. It's been running fine for the past 6 years. The Health Pro Plus has a dust/pollen filter, carbon filter, and HEPA filter. Refills are a bit pricey, so plan on impressing your mother-in-law every few years by buying her re-fills 1 Quote
Cat Jones Posted January 16, 2013 at 03:21 AM Report Posted January 16, 2013 at 03:21 AM I'm thinking it's time to invest in one of these bad boys. Where's the best place to buy in Beijing? Online or in store? Quote
lechuan Posted January 16, 2013 at 06:05 AM Report Posted January 16, 2013 at 06:05 AM I'm not sure, but the IQ Air China website is here: http://www.iqair-china.com/en_gb/home-office-1 Quote

zhouhaochen Posted January 16, 2013 at 04:51 PM Report Posted January 16, 2013 at 04:51 PM As IQair seems to be spending massive amounts on advertising in Beijing, I somehow have the feeling that they need to calculate equally massive profit margins to afford this. anyone knows of cheaper, less branded, but quality wise similar alternatives? Taiwan or Korea maybe? Air Quality index down to 81 by now again in Beijing, thank God. Quote
gato Posted January 16, 2013 at 05:18 PM Report Posted January 16, 2013 at 05:18 PM A doctor poster made some recommendations on this old thread: http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/29028-struggling-with-health-problems-since-coming-to-china/page__st__40#comment-231336 These can be a lot of money, but I recommend you go to Sundan electronics store, there's one in the Sanlitun Village Mall. They have an excellent small air purifier, the Hunter 31125, which is only 1200RMB and works great in small rooms. Sundan also has a Japanese-made shower purifier attachment for around 500RMB. You could easily resell these when you leave Beijing. It's very possible that if you got these and kept the purifier going 24-7, your symptoms may disappear. http://www.myhealthbeijing.com/2010/09/blueair-vs-iqair-and-the-winner-is/ Blueair vs. IQAir Purifiers: And The Winner Is… My smaller air purifier, the Hunter 31125 in my small office, also did quite well. It routinely got 50-70% of pollution even with the constant door opening. At max speed with the door closed for a while, it got 91% of the pollution. I think this is a great option for small rooms, and at 1290RMB is far cheaper and smaller than the other brands. 1 Quote
Cat Jones Posted January 17, 2013 at 02:03 AM Report Posted January 17, 2013 at 02:03 AM Thanks all! Beautiful day here in Beijing today though isn't it? Long may it last! Quote
langxia Posted January 18, 2013 at 05:00 PM Author Report Posted January 18, 2013 at 05:00 PM Thanks for all the input so far. The air purifiers I can buy in shops here are all made in China anyway, so I am thinking about buying one in china when I get there. (I guess they will have restocked by then) Quote
frankwall Posted January 23, 2013 at 11:10 AM Report Posted January 23, 2013 at 11:10 AM How effective are these air purifiers in dealing with pollution like happened in Beijing last weekend? Quote

Brian US Posted February 5, 2013 at 01:21 PM Report Posted February 5, 2013 at 01:21 PM If you are doing it to impress your future mother in law, buy the foreign (made) one. This ^ Yet, for a more practical solution, might want to go domestic in order to easily find replacement filters. Quote
