dreamon Posted January 23, 2013 at 01:37 AM Report Posted January 23, 2013 at 01:37 AM A Chinese woman, who is a 1st-year Marketing MBA student at a (good) mid-tier university in the Pacific Northwest, is interested in a summer internship in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ideally, the intership should leverage her Chinese (and English) language skills and help her develop business connections, as well as provide good experience and education in her field of study. Any suggestions how to search, where to turn, whom to ask? Thanks! Quote
Cat Jones Posted January 23, 2013 at 02:11 AM Report Posted January 23, 2013 at 02:11 AM Can her University's career department not support her in her search? She might also be able to contact Universities in the San Fran area. Otherwise she can search online - Linked In, internship websites etc. Quote
dreamon Posted January 23, 2013 at 02:33 AM Author Report Posted January 23, 2013 at 02:33 AM Cat Jones: Can her University's career department not support her in her search? Any help they provide will be for internships with the local employers who are primary sponsors of the University. Cat Jones: She might also be able to contact Universities in the San Fran area. Otherwise she can search online - Linked In, internship websites etc. Of course she is trying her best to search, between her many assignments and presentations. But she is in the U.S. for less than a year and does not have an experienced mentor. Some guidance would be very helpful. Perhaps, someone could give a past example of a successful MBA internship done by a Chinese student in the Bay Area? Quote
Cat Jones Posted January 24, 2013 at 02:09 AM Report Posted January 24, 2013 at 02:09 AM I cannot believe her University will only help with local internships. Normally they can cast their net wider than that. Some even organise overseas internships. But she can do it herself, she doesn't need a mentor to help her find an internship. Many companies advertise internships on their company websites. If she knows what industry she wants to work in, she needs to do her own research into the companies in that industry in the San Fran area. Look on their websites for internship details, if none are listed she will need to proactively send them her CV with a cover letter to as about opportunities. She can find contacts on Linked In also. dreamon Posted January 26, 2013 at 02:15 AM Author Report Posted January 26, 2013 at 02:15 AM gato: Or she can look back in China.... Her husband works in the SF Bay Area, she wants to stay with him over the summer (and after her graduation). But neither he nor I know much about MBA internships. Presumably there should be plenty of opportunities for a Chinese speaker, isn't that so? Quote
gato Posted January 26, 2013 at 03:58 AM Report Posted January 26, 2013 at 03:58 AM Ability to speak Chinese isn't that much of a plus factor if she's looking for an MBA-level job in the US. Looking for an internship isn't that much different from looking for a job, so her husband might still be able to help her with general job seeking tips. Quote
