British mother pushes child with £75-per-hour Mandarin classes

I ust read this. Apologies for the source (I try not to give too much heed to the Daily Mail):

I pushed my child too far with Mandarin classes, £75-per-hour tutors and endless exams, admits British Mother

More.

Refreshing to see something in Britain that is normally attributed to Chinese parents.

£75 an hour Mandarin tutors? I need to tell my teacher that she needs to come to the UK and market herself to middle-class Daily Mail readers, who clearly have more money than sense.

Note: ah, £75 an hour tutors, not necessarily Mandarin tutors.

Pushy parents are in every culture. It's just that in China, it's extreme, and extreme is normal.

Real Mayo - What gave it away? (However, it is part of my job)

Drencom - I think there are a lot more pushy parents in China (not absolute numbers but proportionately).

I have not met many in the UK (but then I move amongst Daily Mail readers). Otherwise a story like that would not make headline.

Hasn't she heard of boarding school?! If she wants to destroy her child's self worth and encourage an obsessive approach to schoolwork and extra curricular activities she just needs to subject her child to the bullying and oneupmanship of a good old fashioned boarding school. Ah, those were the days.

Advantage is all of the resentment is aimed at housemasters and older children, rather than over zealous tiger parents. It's a perfect sysem

But they have the advantage later in the (bullying) workplace and if they end up in prison it will be a breeze in comparison...

A perfect system - it really is...at producing just the right kind of sociopathic tendencies. And it's true that unlike the asian style of parenting it doesn't leave you hating your parents.
