New Members astratos Posted January 24, 2013 at 04:12 PM New Members Report Share Posted January 24, 2013 at 04:12 PM Hi, I'm new from France to join this honourable forum & guess someone can help with his knowledge. Here is a mark from a bronze censer inherited from one of my grandfathers or grea-tgranfathers. I can scarcely decrypt two of the maybe fourth archaic & horizontal characters at the middle : middle right : tang for hall Middle left : Qing dynasty What about the first to the right : great ? What about the last to the left in form of a brooch & snake ? What is the mystery of this censer ? Many thank's for any response.
lingo-ling Posted January 29, 2013 at 02:56 PM Report Share Posted January 29, 2013 at 02:56 PM Perhaps 玉堂清龍? The one on the left (once it's rotated 180 degrees) looks like 龍 - dragon.
陳德聰 Posted January 29, 2013 at 05:43 PM Report Share Posted January 29, 2013 at 05:43 PM I'm pretty sure it's 玉堂清望 ... but for some reason I am having trouble with the 望 being upside-down(?)... It's late at night, am I crazy?

lingo-ling Posted January 30, 2013 at 02:37 AM Report Share Posted January 30, 2013 at 02:37 AM 玉堂清玩 I found this article about bronze "玉堂清玩" censers: http://baike.baidu.com/view/838934.htm
陳德聰 Posted January 30, 2013 at 03:14 AM Report Share Posted January 30, 2013 at 03:14 AM Uh, where are you seeing 玩? Like I said, 望 seems more likely, because 月 appears to be rendered that way pretty consistently, but I wouldn't be able to tell you why one character would be upside down. lingo-ling Posted January 30, 2013 at 03:20 AM Report Share Posted January 30, 2013 at 03:20 AM I found the 玩 by googling "玉堂清". Up popped articles on bronze censers called "玉堂清玩" censers.
陳德聰 Posted January 30, 2013 at 04:14 AM Report Share Posted January 30, 2013 at 04:14 AM Yes, so did I, and yet the character is clearly not 玩...
