Northern_Lights Posted February 17, 2013 at 06:31 PM Report Posted February 17, 2013 at 06:31 PM A couple of questions for those who have used the FSI course. Did you use the written material? (I have noticed that the book does not teach or even contain any characters). There are a few nice grammar points in the book though. So did you not use the book at all? Refer back to it either before or after working through the lesson? Or did you sit with the book open at the same time as you worked through each lesson? I am mostly looking for how others worked through the FSI course, as I am not opposed to using any of these methods, just wonder how others worked used the resource materials. Quote
querido Posted February 17, 2013 at 09:18 PM Report Posted February 17, 2013 at 09:18 PM I didn't use FSI, but here are some transcripts. I don't know how well they're done: http://www.geo168.co...n/fsi/index.php Quote
tec Posted February 23, 2013 at 07:15 PM Report Posted February 23, 2013 at 07:15 PM I used the books with the recordings. (I sent the pdfs off to Lulu for binding, but after I got an iPad I put the pdfs in GoodReader, so the same device handled both the books and recordings.) I would only use the recordings with the books; I don't think they are that valuable self-standing. The way I used them was to read the book, then listen to both recordings, and finally go through the drills. I never warmed to the exercises, and if I were to do it again I would not bother with the workbooks at all. If I had questions I took them up with my tutor, and I put the vocabulary into Anki. As you say, there are good grammar explanations in the books. In fact, some are as exhaustive as you will find anywhere. Obviously you need to find other materials to learn reading, but for their intended use, the FSI series are still very good. Quote
