does 過 have to come immediately after a verb?

I've just started studying Chinese using the sentence pack from iKnow.

I've come across this sentence that I don't understand:

我们在家里过周末。

我們在家里過周末。

Wǒmen zài jiāli guò zhōumò.

We spend the weekends at home.

All of the grammar explanations I could find seem to say that 过 is used to "indicate completion" (as in like, "I have drank tea") and it always immediately follows the verb.

In this case, 过 appears not to follow the verb, but I couldn't find any other example sentences that match up with this? Could anyone help me out with this one? Why am I not able to find a grammatical structure similar to this on the net or in any grammar books?
